Limiting your search

If you wish to create a targeted or limited search, make sure you are using the Advanced Search option.

Notice the large green box on the lower portion of the search screen, labelled Limit your results.

If your search returns a huge number of articles, you might decide to impose some of these limits : choose only the most recently published ones, choose only those appearing in a certain journal, specify only book reviews, or whatever. For some reason, CPLI and OTA allow you to limit by language, but NTA does not. A large number of the articles in these databases are in European languages, even though all of the abstracts are in English.

If you do impose a limiter, be sure to remove it before you do your next search.

Saving, printing or emailing your results

You may choose to save some of your search results, print out the list or email them to yourself. The first step is to select the ones you want to keep.

On the far right side of the search results screen, there are little icons resembling a file folder, with the word Add. If you select a record and click on its Add symbol, it will turn into a little open folder showing a document in it, with the word Added.

You also have the option of adding a whole page of results at once. At the top of the column containing these symbols, you will see another one with the message Add (1-2) if there are two items on the page. If there are 10 items on the page, it will say Add (1-10). Clicking on that symbol will select all of the records on that page.

Up above the search results box, you see the open-folder icon and the words Folder has items. (Naturally, if you haven't saved anything yet, you will see a closed folder and the words Folder is empty.)

Click on the words Folder has items. It will take you to a screen from which you can print these records or email them to yourself (or someone else). These operations are clearly explained -- just follow the instructions on the page. Take note that after you print or send these records, the folder will be emptied in preparation for your next search. If you want the records to remain in your folder, you must uncheck the box that says Remove these items from folder.

You may also save the records in NotePad text format or HTML, on a floppy disk or on your computer's hard drive. If you save the records in HTML, they will contain persistent links to return you to the database. Right now, this feature is not particularly helpful. But when we are able to activate our SFX system, this feature will allow full-text access to any available article.

The SFX links

As mentioned above, the SFX feature of our catalog and databases is not yet operational. When it takes effect, it will greatly enhance our ability to deliver full-text content from electronic journals. Instructions will be posted here to help you use that new feature.
