Printing full text / Sending full text

When you have completed a search and received a set of search results, some of the articles you have found will be available in our collection in full-text electronic form; some will be on paper in our periodicals stacks; and some will be included in edited books. For examples of these different sources and how they are displayed, see Understanding your search results.

You might decide to print an article you found in full-text electronic form. If you are in your home or office, you can use the printer that is associated with your own computer. If you are in the Library, use one of the four computers in the Reference Room. These machines are networked to a laser printer in the Circulation Office. When you send a print command, the article will be printed there.

On your search results page, choose one of the articles with a link that says View Full Text on remote site (ATLA). It may say instead View Full Text in GIF format (ATLA), or some other format such as HTML or PDF.

Click on the View Full Text link. After a moment, the first page of the article you have chosen appears, in full-text digital form. If you are ready to print this article, click on Display/print multiple pages.

Note that the default, for some reason, is set to print only one page of this article. To get the entire article, you must enter the whole page range, from the first page to the last.

When you have done this, click on Display. Allow the chosen pages to load on your screen -- it may take a minute or two. When they are finished, your browser's print window should automatically open. Then, you can actually send the Print command.

If you are working on one of the computers in the Reference Room, your print command will be sent to the new RICOH copier in the atrium, under the stairs. Follow the instructions beside each Reference Room computer explaining how to send and retrieve a document printing job.

Sending articles to yourself by email

You can also send a set of selected articles to yourself (or someone else) in an email message. Please note that this will work only for records containing a View Full Text link. If you choose an article that is not available in electronic full-text form, you will send only a citation or bib record, not a link to the article itself.

First, mark the records you want to keep by clicking on the tiny square box to the left of each chosen record. A green check mark appears in each box. Once you have selected the records you want, find the large button labelled Marked Records, just above the row of icons.

Click on Marked Records. You receive a new results list, containing only those records you selected and marked. Now, click on the Email button.

You can choose to send these marked records in brief or detailed form; supply your email address, and they will be sent directly to you.

Choose HTML as your Record Format. That way, you will be able to link directly to the full-text article from your email message. Those links remain valid for one week after you send them. You can click on the link that says View Full Text in GIF format (ATLA) to open the article, then print it out according to the instructions above. Or, you can save the article to the hard drive of your own computer.
