The audio-visual and curricula materials of Union Theological Seminary and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education were combined in the early 1970s. This resulted in a more centralized collection of media for students, faculty, and community patrons and began a strong commitment to the development of teaching and learning materials of all types for theological education. Today, our Resource Center houses more than 4000 visual titles, more than 20,000 audio titles, a large collection of curriculum from a variety of publishers and denominations, as well as slides, posters, and maps. Almost all of the material in the Instructional Resource Center is cataloged and available through our online public catalog. This integration of print and non-print items is significant in theological libraries and we are proud of this institution’s commitment to all forms of educational materials. Most of our collection is available for use by any patron with borrowing privileges from the library. (A small number of videocassettes, and audiocassettes are restricted to classroom or Library use and some material cannot be mailed through our Extension Program.) In addition, visual titles can be reserved for use up to a year in advance. The Instructional Resource Center is located on the second floor of the library and is open during all open library hours, although it is staffed 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Most of our material is housed in public shelving and accessible to patrons during open hours. Visual titles (videos and DVDs) are not accessible in the Center when no staff is available, but material can be left at the circulation desk for pick up after 4:30 p.m. or on weekends. Contact a staff member listed below to schedule a pick up after hours. Audiovisual items on reserve are always available and are located in a cabinet at the bottom of the stairs in the Center. As the Library staff has worked hard to provide access to the materials in the IRC on our online catalog, we hope you will take the time to go through the tutorial that will give you skill in locating material by specific type and Christian education curricula.
